Why a Mezzanine Is One of the Smartest Investments You'll Make

You're already paying for the footprint — but most spaces waste 100% of their vertical clearance. A custom GVP steel mezzanine converts dead air into usable square footage at a fraction of real estate cost — and the financial upside goes far beyond just getting more room.

01

Double Your Usable Square Footage

Most warehouses, shops, and garages have 14–40 ft of unused vertical clearance. A mezzanine converts that space into storage, offices, lofts, production areas, or showroom — without expanding your footprint or relocating.

02

Fraction of the Cost of Real Estate

New sq footage via lease or purchase often runs $100–$500+ per sq ft in today's market. A GVP mezzanine typically delivers new sq footage at $25–$75 per sq ft — with no broker fees, no deposits, and zero business interruption.

03

Depreciable Business Asset

A steel mezzanine goes directly on your company's books as a fixed, depreciable asset — improving your financial position with lenders, investors, and during business valuations or acquisitions.

04

Significant Tax Write-Off

Under IRS Section 179, qualifying businesses may deduct the full purchase price in the year of purchase. Combined with bonus depreciation and ongoing MACRS deductions, the net after-tax cost is often dramatically lower than the sticker price.*

05

Increases Appraised Property Value

Appraisers count mezzanine square footage as part of the building. Since the appraised value-per-sq-ft often exceeds your installation cost per sq ft, the mezzanine creates instant equity — and supports higher loan values or sale prices.

06

Fully Portable & Resellable

Because GVP systems are bolted, not welded, they disassemble completely. Relocate to a new facility, reconfigure as needs change, or sell on the secondary market. You never leave your investment behind — even if you leave the building.

Fast Installation

Most systems installed in days, not months. No major permits required for many applications. Minimal business disruption.

Custom Fabricated Steel

Every kit is fabricated to your exact dimensions and load requirements — residential loft to 10,000 sq ft industrial platform.

The Mezzanine Pays for Itself

Avoided rent, eliminated storage costs, new revenue, and tax savings combine to deliver strong, measurable ROI.

Real-World Example

A logistics company adds a 2,000 sq ft GVP mezzanine for $90,000. It eliminates $2,500/month in off-site storage and avoids leasing 2,000 sq ft at $1,800/month. Combined savings: $4,300/month — full payback in under 21 months. The asset stays on the books indefinitely, appraised value increases, and Section 179 reduces the first-year net cost by thousands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Go Vertical Platforms is a manufacturer of custom mezzanine and elevated platform kit systems. We design and fabricate steel platforms that help businesses maximize their vertical space — turning underutilized overhead areas into productive square footage for storage, offices, production, or equipment support.
We serve warehousing & distribution, manufacturing & industrial, automotive, retail, aerospace & defense, cold storage, data centers, residential, and institutional facilities. If you have a vertical space challenge, we have a solution.
Not sure if your application is a fit? Call us — we've built platforms for a wide range of uses across the country.
Our key differentiators: true custom kit systems designed specifically for your space, pre-fabricated bolt-together components for fast field assembly, no welding required in most cases, and a direct relationship from design through delivery. We focus on delivering the right platform — not the fastest quote on a standard product.
Engineering services are available for projects that require them — just ask.
Both. We work directly with building owners and facility managers, and we partner with general contractors, material handling integrators, racking installers, and design-build firms. Our kit format makes it easy for installation contractors to assemble our platforms efficiently on any job site.
Our kit systems cover: Steel Mezzanines, Work Platforms & Maintenance Decks, Rack-Supported Platforms, Multi-Level Mezzanines, Catwalk Systems, and Equipment Support Platforms. Residential loft systems are also available.
Highly custom. We design around your space. Custom elements include footprint (L-shape, U-shape, irregular), column placement around obstructions, deck surface type, stair location and style, handrail design, finish, and features like pallet drop zones or conveyor openings.
Our design team works from your floor plan, photos, or an on-site visit.
A fully engineered, pre-fabricated system where components are made to final dimensions, labeled, and shipped ready for assembly. A kit includes structural columns and base plates, primary and secondary beams (pre-drilled), deck panels, stair systems, perimeter handrail & toe plate, all connection hardware, anchor bolt kit, and structural assembly drawings.
No welding required in the field for most installations.
Bar Grating (steel or galvanized) for light and ventilation; Checkered Plate for heavy loads and forklift traffic; Structural Plywood (resin-coated) for office areas; FRP Fiberglass Grating for wash-down / chemical environments; Composite / Specialty available upon request.
Yes. Accommodating existing site conditions is core to our design process. We design around building columns, sprinkler drops, lighting, overhead doors, utilities, and drainage. Share your facility drawings or photos early — the more we know, the better your kit fits your space.
Not all GVP systems require formal engineering. Many of our residential, light commercial, and smaller industrial platforms are sold as designed kits — the customer receives assembly drawings and takes responsibility for installation and any applicable local requirements. For larger commercial and industrial projects where engineering is required or requested, we can coordinate stamped drawings through a licensed PE. Contact us early in your project to discuss what level of documentation is appropriate for your application.
Engineering services are available — they are not automatic on every order. We'll advise you on what your project needs.
Our systems are designed to your specified live load. Per IBC Table 1607.1, common minimum design live loads are:
  • 50 psf — Office / residential use
  • 60–90 psf — Light access / catwalk / maintenance platforms
  • 125 psf — Light storage / light manufacturing (IBC minimum for storage)
  • 250 psf — Heavy storage / warehouse / pallet use
  • 500+ psf — Heavy industrial / equipment support
These are IBC minimums — your actual design load is based on your intended use. Always tell us what you plan to put on the platform.
Not sure what load you need? Start with your intended use — storage, office, equipment — and we'll recommend the appropriate rating.
It depends on your project type, location, and how the mezzanine is classified. Here's the honest breakdown:
  • Residential / personal property use — Many residential and private-use mezzanines (garages, shops, man caves) are treated as personal property and may not require a permit, depending on your local jurisdiction. Always verify with your local building department.
  • Commercial / industrial use — In most commercial and industrial settings, mezzanines trigger building permit requirements because they are classified as a new floor level under IBC Section 505. Permits typically require structural drawings.
We do not handle permitting. That is the customer's responsibility. We can provide design drawings to support your permit application if needed, but we do not interface with building departments on your behalf.
Bottom line: check with your local building department before installation. Requirements vary widely by city, county, and state.
The codes that typically apply to mezzanines depend on the use and jurisdiction. Common references include IBC Section 505 (mezzanine definition and area limits), AISC (steel construction), and ASCE 7 (design loads). Our kits are fabricated to reasonable industry standards for the intended use. For projects where full code compliance is required — particularly commercial and industrial installations — engineering services and jurisdiction-specific design are available upon request. Residential and light-use platforms are sold as kit systems; the customer is responsible for verifying local requirements.
Code compliance is ultimately the customer's and installer's responsibility. We are happy to support projects that need documentation — just ask.
Discovery → Concept Layout → Proposal → Order & Engineering → Fabrication → Delivery → Installation Support. We maintain the relationship through every step.
Design & drawings: 1–2 weeks. Fabrication: 4–8 weeks. Total order-to-ship: typically 8–12 weeks. Rush scheduling available in some circumstances.
Lead times vary based on project complexity and current production schedule. Contact us early — the sooner we start, the sooner your kit ships.
Helpful info: desired footprint, deck height, intended use, live load requirement, deck surface preference, stair locations, facility drawings or photos, and project location. Don't have everything? That's okay — we can start with the basics and develop the rest together.
Yes. We ship throughout the continental United States via flatbed or step-deck truck. Our kits are packaged and labeled for efficient unloading and organized assembly. Contact us for international shipping options.
We are a supply-only company — we design, engineer, and fabricate your kit, but installation is handled on your end. You have three common options:
  • DIY — experienced maintenance and facilities teams regularly self-install our kits using our assembly drawings and instructions
  • Hire helpers — bring in a general labor crew or handyman team familiar with structural bolting and basic rigging
  • Hire a contractor — a local general contractor, steel erector, or material handling installer can assemble our kit efficiently using the detailed drawings we provide
Our bolt-together, pre-drilled kit format is specifically designed to make installation as straightforward as possible for any of these approaches — no welding required in most cases.
We're happy to walk your installation team through the drawings and answer questions before and during assembly.
In most cases, no. Our kit systems are designed for fully bolted assembly — all connections are pre-drilled and hardware is included. No welding capability needed on-site, which simplifies logistics, reduces fire watch requirements, and speeds up assembly.
For an experienced 3–4 person crew: under 2,000 sq ft — 2–4 days; 2,000–5,000 sq ft — 4–8 days; larger systems — 1–3+ weeks. Our kit format minimizes field time and eliminates on-site cutting or modification.
Mezzanine pricing varies based on size, load, deck type, and site factors. As a general reference, structural steel mezzanine kits commonly range from $20 to $50+ per square foot for supply only. Installation and permitting are additional. The best path to accurate pricing is a direct quote from our team.
Comparing mezzanine cost to new construction or additional lease space almost always shows significant savings.
Yes — a key advantage of our bolted kit system. Because components are bolted (not welded), a mezzanine can be disassembled, relocated to a new facility, and reinstalled. Expansion is also straightforward. We retain your engineering documentation to facilitate future additions.
Mezzanines are generally classified as depreciable personal property (equipment), which can allow accelerated depreciation and potential Section 179 deductions. Tax treatment depends on installation specifics and jurisdiction. Consult your CPA for guidance — this can be a significant financial benefit.
Many customers factor accelerated depreciation into their ROI analysis when comparing a mezzanine to permanent construction.
We warrant our kit systems against defects in materials and workmanship. Structural warranty terms are provided in your project contract. Coverage does not extend to installation errors, misuse, overloading, or unauthorized modifications. Contact us for project-specific warranty language.
Structural steel mezzanines are low-maintenance. Recommended practices: annual visual inspections, bolt torque verification after initial loading, touch-up painting on worn finish areas, and never exceeding the posted load rating. Any forklift or equipment impact damage should be assessed before return to service.
Yes, with engineering review. We retain records for all projects we supply, enabling efficient engineering and fabrication of compatible additions. Do not make structural modifications without engineering review — cutting beams, removing columns, or adding loads without analysis can compromise structural integrity.
Contact us before any modifications. We can usually provide a quick feasibility assessment and quote.
